4 out of 5 stars Pluses and Minuses Versus Mommy's Helper Safer Grip 16.5"   July 11, 2008

(I'm guessing that similar comments will apply to the Health Circle Quick-Rail Suction Cup Bath Rail, White, 24" Long.)

I have 4 inch tiles in my shower, and so can't use products like the Bridge Medical Single Grip Portable Grab Bar. Instead, I bought this product and compared it with Mommy's Helper Safer Grip 16.5" (which actually seems to be "MHI Safe-er-Grip Bathtub & Shower Handle 17 Inches Long").

The official title on the box is "Health Circle Quick Rail Suction-Cup Grab Bar." The UPC code on the box is 9398812501, where it also says "Model #12501." The outside of the box gives three-step illustrated instructions ("clean and dry surface thoroughly," "place bar flat on tiles (avoid grout lines)," and "press down one lever then the other to secure"). More detailed instructions (e.g., regarding use only on non-porous surfaces) are provided on a piece of paper in English, French, and Spanish.

The all-white unit (except for the green levers) isn't very pretty. The ribs running around the handle may be practical, but they make the thing look like a vacuum cleaner hose. Raised letters in small print on the top side of the handle read "Use as assist only. Check attachment before use." I measured the length to be 19-1/2" and the distance between the centers of the 3-1/2" suction cups to be 16". Because of the 4" tiles, the only way I could mount the bar and avoid grout lines was diagonally at 56 or 34 degrees to the floor (two tiles to the side and three tiles up, or vice versa). When the suction cups were activated, I couldn't pull the item off the wall horizontally (didn't try to put all my weight on it).

Overall, the product seems sound. Advantages compared with the Mommy's Helper product: better instructions, less slippery grip due to the rings. Disadvantages: less attractive, more expensive, longer (a problem if you want to take it on a trip). Buy this from Amazon.com!
