Am I spoiled by quality and durability? September 29, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Chapter One: I am a 47-year-old man with a spinal cord injury causing quadriplegia, and haved used a wheelchair since age 15. My first wheelchair, and all subsequent ones, were made by Everest and Jennings. When my 11-year-old E&J chair began to show signs of peripheral wear, I tried to order a new one, but found out that E&J had changed owners several times. I ordered a new wheelchair, but eventually canceled the order when it became clear that the company was undergoing massive changes and could not, at that time, fill my order.
Chapter Two: I began looking around for a wheelchair that looked comparable to the E&J ones I had used. I ended up ordering a variation on the chair shown here (a 9000 XT with several extra features). When it arrived, I knew immediately that, after spending over $2,000, all that I had received was a mediocre, E&J wannabe that would service as a back-up wheelchair only. All the features were there, and the ride was smooth and quiet, but it was just obviously a lesser chair in quality of all materials used. Many parts that were metal on my E&J wheelchairs are plastic on the Invacare chair.
Chapter Three: I still use my now-fourteen-year-old Everest and Jennings wheelchair, and a very expensive Invacare wheelchair sits in the basement as an emergency back-up. When I need a new wheelchair, I'll have to look elsewhere, possibly at Quickie or Guardian.
