2 out of 5 stars Beware!   December 10, 2008
I broke my heel bone and I am in a cast for six weeks. Thought that a knee walker would help my mobility issues. Here is what I discovered about this type of knee walker.
Since the front wheels swivel, it is hard to go in a straight line. Everyone in my family that tried it, felt that it pulled too much to the left. I called the manufactuer and was told that it does pull naturally to one side. I might have ended up doing a split if I wasn't careful. You have to use the handbrake all the time to try to keep it straight. My husband thought that the wheels should be reversed from front to back. But that doesn't work eigher. I almost would prefer wheels that don't turn.

The knee pad does not stick out far enough if you want to sit down for a minute to take a break.

Assembly instruction were poor. One of the braking wheel was so tight it wouldn't turn at all. Made the necessary adjustment but you need someone skilled with a pair of pliers.

I decided to return mine immediately. Very dissappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Anyone want to buy some low mileage crutches .   November 14, 2008

My wife had a foot operation . 2 bone grafts several pins and screws which require 6 to 8 weeks in a cast . She used the knee walker for 2 weeks now . Due to national security issue my wifes age and weight can not be discussed but I 56 and weigh 225 lbs and its plenty strong for me .
I think some of the bad reviews are due to not understand the proper application of this device . It's for a leg with a cast below the knee. Its not a standard walker. The front wheel are suppose to swivel 360 degrees.
We live in a very small house (1000 sq foot ) hard wood floors thin Asian rugs and semi long shag in the bedroom several washable throw rugs on tile floors its working well in all areas. The only thing I can say it the turning radius is a bit large but we are in small house . My wife has zero dexterity on crutches if she would have used them for the last 2 week she probably have a broken arm . We carried it in the car ( it collapses flat so don't tie wrap the basket to the frame cause it would have to be removed ) used it in the total hospital application elevators and garages works fine . Uphill in subterranean garages is not easy but can be done using the brake (so drop off at lobby and park downhill from the elevator in the garage )
You cant say there is any assembly required you remove the plastic cover from the tires .You adjust the leg length (to users height) using 2 pushbutton on each leg . A very civilized little device . I built a wheelchair ramp to connect the front porch to city sidewalk (first week ) first thing she did as I was showing her my work was blast down it like a kid on a skateboard the point I trying to make is I think the walker has improved her moral overall by increased and simplified mobility as compared to crutches .

4 out of 5 stars A Good Option   November 2, 2008
The Invacare knee walker has been a great option to get me out of a wheelchair. With a broken left ankle and left thumb, crutches weren't an option. I tried a Weil knee walker and found it very stable but cumbersome to use and akward to get in and out of my SUV alone. I also looked at knee walkers with fixed front wheels. Though I hadn't tried them, they appeared limiting. Then I saw someone on an Invacare knee walker. Seeing the movable front wheels and on her recommendation, I ordered mine.

It's been great. It gets me vertical vs. sitting in a wheelchair. I can easily get around the house while keeping the rest of my body active and still stay off my ankle. It maneuvers quickly and easily. It's lightweight, and for travel, it folds easily to toss in and out of the backseat without loosing my balance. It's best on carpet but with caution I do take it out shopping or on pavement. Pavement slanted perpendicular to your route of travel can be a challenge. The front wheels do veer when you shift your weight from your good leg to the kneeling leg. Invacare tech support says the front wheels "will always veer" and buying additional stationary rear wheel assemblies to replace the front wheels isn't an option. "They aren't available". I agree that this knee walker might not be best for someone who is elderly or not very steady. But for me it's been a turning point in my mobility. The freedom that it's given me far outweighs its limitations.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste your money!   October 18, 2008
Invacare Knee Walker is almost impossible to make go in the direction that you want it to go, which makes it pretty impossible to use. The price they charge for it is way too high. This product is a waste of your money. I returned mine and got a Nova Petite Walker that works like a dream. It was half the cost and twice the value. I can get around the house by sitting on the seat or resting my knee on it or using it as a walker. It's easy to steer and easy to use the brakes on it. I wouldn't recommend the Knee Walker to anyone. Don't waste your money.
